The inhabitants of the Grand Canyon State are amazed to realize that Phoenix has climbed to number 5 among the largest cities in the United States and the facts speak for themselves.

With more than 4.3 million people occupying dozens of towns and villages that spread across 2,000 square miles, the capital city of Arizona is clearly the political, commercial and recreational center of the Southwestern United States.

Not only it is the home of major league teams, but also has modern restaurants whose chefs appear on the covers of national food magazines, as well as a magnificent airport called Sky Harbor International which is among the top ten busiest airports of country including the public transport system METRO light rail. World-class arts, shopping and outdoor parks and recreation areas are easily accessible making it a dream package to visit.

There is only one way to see everything and this is done by having a proper plan to spend additional time to explore. Exploring the city by a car can also be a good idea and it is always recommended to book a car in advance for best rental deals.

Phoenix is flooded with modern amenities of "big city", but remain rooted to historic southwest and a relaxed "small town" atmosphere. Just take a horseback ride, visit an art gallery or just look out of the window the sublime cactus and mountain landscapes of the Sonoran Desert, and know instantly that this is an exceptionally a beautiful place.

You have to be a part of the cultural heart of the region and visit the Heard Museum, which is a unique showcase of Indian art and folklore. Its excellent gift shop allows you to buy the best that the city has produced in crafts. Many more excellent museums are just around the corner.

For those who like shouting and cheering, the NBA Phoenix Suns practice their counterattacks at the U.S. Airways Center downtown. From April to September is the time when you can find the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field. The retractable roof is opened depending on the weather.

Anyway, you probably will visit Phoenix to enjoy the sun on one of the sunny and dry climates and all that means outdoor fun. Hikers of all abilities willingly include to the trails of Piestewa Peak, where the reward for reaching the summit is a breathtaking view of the city center. Camelback Mountain, South Mountain Park, the Vedado North Mountain, Phoenix Zoo and Desert Botanical Garden are other attractions within the city that are worth visiting.
